# Redeem at checkout

Let signed-in customers spend their Shopwaive balance or budgets with one press at checkout, with Shopwaive's Redeem block. Shopify Plus

<figure><img src="https://1743155819-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F6HSAZj4RDucpQwVtzMYt%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-25ac6d2fe1fda44043ba86d758abdda61f66d5a2%2Fhero-shopper-currency.jpg?alt=media" alt="A shopper in Europe spends their Harbor cash balance at checkout on a phone: 20.00 euros applied to the order, in the shopper&#x27;s own currency"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Redeem** is Shopwaive's checkout block. A signed-in customer spends their [Shopwaive balance](/shopify/customers/accounts.md) or a [budget](/shopify/budgets.md) with one press. It needs Shopify Plus or a development store. On other plans, customers spend with [Get a code](/shopify/get-a-code.md) and in [Shopify POS](/shopify/shopify-pos.md).

## Add the block

The quickest way is from the [Extensions](/shopify/extensions.md) page.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the Shopwaive app, open **Extensions**. On the **Redeem in checkout** row, press **Add in editor**. Shopify's checkout and accounts editor opens at the Shopwaive blocks.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Add **Redeem** where you want it, for example in the order summary.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Press **Save**. In the editor the block shows sample content and the notice "Redeem extension is disabled while in editor mode". That is expected: the block works at checkout.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Shopify's own steps are in [Customizing your checkout and customer accounts with apps](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/customize-checkout-configurations/checkout-apps).

## Set its words and look

1. In the Shopwaive app, open **Extensions** and click the **Redeem** row.
2. Change what you need:
   * **Text and descriptions**: press **Edit text** to change the words customers see. Every text has built-in words, so nothing here needs changing to go live.
   * **Design and layout**: the button style and color, the heading alignment and your logo.
   * **Budgets**: how a customer with budgets sees them.
   * **How it works**: **Customers choose an amount** adds an amount field, and **A switch instead of the button** makes one tap apply the whole balance.
3. Watch the preview. Use **Shown as** to see each state, such as **No balance** or **Applied**.
4. When the **Save** bar appears, press **Save**.

<figure><img src="https://1743155819-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F6HSAZj4RDucpQwVtzMYt%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-ef81d3b20bc7fb5b4b79bc0ea526da013fd8edf8%2Fapp-extension-editor.jpg?alt=media" alt="The Redeem editor in the Shopwaive app: its settings beside a live preview of the block"><figcaption><p>The Redeem editor on the Extensions page</p></figcaption></figure>

The block is shown to a signed-in customer who has a balance or a budget. A balance is never applied automatically: the customer presses the **Redeem** button (on a store that shows a switch instead, the customer turns it on). The balance is taken from the account when Shopify reports the order as paid, so an abandoned checkout takes nothing.

{% hint style="info" %}
The default extension applies an Order discount in the amount the customer desires to redeem. The discount only applies toward the subtotal of merchandise items. To let the balance also pay toward taxes, shipping and fees, see [Gift codes at checkout](/shopify/extensions/extend-with-gift-codes.md).
{% endhint %}

Redeemed balances can be combined with other discounts or promotional codes if you enable this feature in the Shopify Discounts panel when creating the discount. Make these selections in the Combinations card, where you can choose to combine with other Products, Shipping, or Order discounts.

## Loyalty block <a href="#loyalty-block" id="loyalty-block"></a>

If you run a [Loyalty](/shopify/loyalty.md) program, add Shopwaive's **Loyalty** block to your checkout. It shows what the order earns, and the rewards the customer can use under **Your rewards**. The customer applies a reward with one press on **Apply**. At checkout the block needs Shopify Plus. It shows only while your program is **Live**.

The quickest way to add it: on step 3 of the Loyalty page, click **Open checkout and accounts editor**. Shopify's editor opens at the Shopwaive **Loyalty** blocks. Add **Loyalty** to your checkout and click **Save**. On every plan, the same block can show the earn line on the **Thank you** page. See [Step 3: Show on your store](/shopify/loyalty.md#step-3-show-on-your-store).

## Limit spending to collections

By default, customers can spend their Shopwaive balance on every product. To limit it:

1. In Shopwaive, open **Settings**, then **Checkout**.
2. Under **Redemption**, press **Choose collections** next to **Only these collections**. Shopify's collection picker opens.
3. Choose the collections, then press **Save**.

Leave the list empty to allow every product. To clear it, press **Remove all**.

### Message for ineligible items <a href="#message-for-ineligible-items" id="message-for-ineligible-items"></a>

When a cart holds only items outside those collections, the checkout block shows a short sentence instead of Shopify's refusal. The default reads "Your balance can't be used on the items in your cart." (or "Your points can't be used on the items in your cart." at a store that shows points).

To use your own words, edit **Message for ineligible items**, directly under the collection list. You can add a translation for each language your checkout runs in. A sentence can be up to 300 characters.

The field shows while collections limit redemption and gift code redemption is off. A store that uses **Collection limits on each account** sees it too.

## Multi-currency at checkout <a href="#multi-currency-at-checkout" id="multi-currency-at-checkout"></a>

With **Multi-currency at checkout** on, customers check out in their own market's currency and use their Shopwaive balance there. You give balances in your store's main currency. At checkout, Shopwaive converts the amount at the exchange rate and takes the matching amount from the balance.

* To turn it on, open **Settings** > **Balances** and, under **Store Currency**, turn on **Multi-currency at checkout**.
* It is for online checkout on Shopify Plus. It does not apply to Shopify POS.

## Subscriptions

* By default, Redeem creates a discount code for one-time items. On a cart that mixes subscription and one-time items, the amount it offers is limited to the one-time items.
* To let the Redeem discount code apply to subscription items too, open **Settings** > **Checkout** > **Redemption** in the Shopwaive app, turn on **Subscription-eligible discount codes** and click **Save**. The code then also applies to the first billing cycle of subscription items, on a store that sells subscription products. The checkbox shows while the Gift Cards Extension is off.
* With the [Gift Cards Extension](/shopify/extensions/extend-with-gift-codes.md) on, the gift code pays toward the whole first order, subscription items included.
* Renewals are charged to the customer's payment method. They are not paid from the balance.
